A Psychological Perspective on Love and Sexuality Part II

Developmental trauma significantly affects how individuals perceive and express their sexuality. Early experiences of neglect, shame, or rejection shape their beliefs about their worthiness and the safety of intimate connections.

These experiences often lead to feelings of shame surrounding sexual desires. Many people who have faced this type of trauma struggle with guilt or embarrassment related to their sexual interests, which often stem from childhood experiences where curiosity or expressions of affection were met with disapproval or shame. For instance, children raised in an environment where discussions about the body and intimacy were considered taboo may feel self-conscious about expressing their needs in adult intimate relationships, fearing judgment or rejection from their partner.
